Preserving The Heritage:
The Barriefield Story.

Barriefield Village was established in 1814 by local businessman, Hon. Richard Cartwright who recognized the need for housing to support the Kingston Naval Dockyard and redevelopment of Fort Henry.

By the 19th century, Barriefield Village grew in size due to its focus on the boat-building industry. Barriefield’s economic vitality took a turn for the worse in the mid-20th century as a result of an unstable economy and lack of new development.

In 1980, Barriefield Village earned the distinction of being the first Village in Ontario to be designated as a Heritage Conservation District (HCD). Dedicated residents created the Barriefield Village Association (BVA) in 2011 to preserve the villages rich heritage and long-standing legacy.
